The Sydney International Rowing Regatta took place in late
March and it had a strong Monash presence with many of our rowers competing
in the regatta's events.
The week-long regatta hosts both state-wide and national
rowing events, including the Australian National Championships and the
Interstate Open King's and Queen's Cups.
Monash student athlete and medicine student Indran Mukherjee represented South Australia in the
Interstate Open Men’s 8 Kings Cup and managed to cox his boat to a bronze medal.
“The culmination of the
week is
on Sunday which is the Interstate Regatta and the final event is the Interstate
Men’s 8 which was mine,” Indran said.
“NSW and VIC shot out of the blocks, which was expected but
so did WA, so we were sitting about two thirds to half a length behind WA for
the majority of the race and it wasn’t really until I made the decision to push
a little bit early that we started stepping through and with about 200-250 to
go we pulled level and managed to finish a few seats in front of them.”
The King's Cup is the most prestigious event of the regatta
and to medal in the Open Men’s 8 was a huge accomplishment for Indran and his
boat.

“This was the 100th anniversary of the King's Cup
so I was very privileged to be a part of it,” Indran said.
Economics student Jayden Grey competed in the Interstate
Championships as well, winning gold in the Interstate Lightweight 4 which was his
second gold of the week after winning the Open Lightweight 4 for Mercantile
rowing club.
Monash also had a solid representation in the Australian
Nationals section of the regatta.
Both Anthony Lee and Harry Cathcart got their first taste
of the Open age events and were satisfied with their results.
Anthony, an Arts student and member of Banks rowing club,
was very excited to attend the regatta and relished the chance to compete.
“It was my first season rowing with the club and I’m
still two years younger than most people in the events so in the next few years
I’ve got a lot of improvements to make,” Anthony said.
Third-year Aerospace engineering student Harry Cathcart is already looking forward to having another crack next year and improving.
“It was more of a learning experience [for me] because I’d
never raced in this boat class before, especially at such a level,” Harry said.
“I just wanted to take the opportunity.
“[The event] was really tiring but really inspiring for
next season as well.”
Harry is a member of Mercantile rowing club and said he was
already training for next season with the hopes of rowing overseas sometime in
the near future.
Overall, the regatta was a success and the Monash students
present represented the University with pride and we are all very proud of
their efforts, good luck again next year!
