In a terrific result for Monash, the Cricket Club’s Men’s 1st XI and Women’s 1st XI have both won the Premiership this summer season.

The Women’s team had a very strong win in their final two weeks ago, triumphing over Brighton District 1/87 to 8/85. The Men’s match, held last Sunday, was closer, with Monash defeating the Melbourne Cobras 4/159 to 157 all out.

The last Premiership for the Men’s XIs was 24 years ago.

Club president Stephen Pearson, who has been involved with the club for the last 23 years, said both wins were “team efforts”.

“In a final it’s hard to have stand out individual performances because both [sides] are so competitive,” he said.

“The women’s game wasn’t particularly close, so the big thing for the women was how well we fielded. In the guy’s [match], we took a lot of wickets early, so that was exciting.”
“The highlight… was when our former captain, who we were playing against, was caught out in a really good catch by one of our good players - Lachie. It’s all amicable, there are no hard feelings in it, but that was a big moment in the game.”

the Women's team only began playing cricket three years ago.

Having won both the summer outdoor season and the T20 Premiership, and losing only one match for the season, Stephen said the Women’s team "will now be promoted to Shield”.

“This is quite an impressive feat considering most of the players in the team only started three years ago [when the Monash University Women’s team was restarted],” Stephen said.

Heading into winter cricket, the University will field four Men’s teams, and a Women’s team in a Doveton competition starting in May.
Let’s hope this winning streak is just the beginning!
