Meet the 2019 Nationals Div 1 Golf team!!
How has your team gone in the past at Nationals?
Our team has placed in the medals in 2016 and 2017 Uni
games. No team was sent in 2018.
How is the team looking this year? How have you gone in
competitions so far in 2019?
The team is looking strong and firing in all cylinders.
With no competitions held this year to date, the boys met up for a practice
session and an absolute ball striking clinic was put on by the boys.
What is the goal of your team at this year's Nationals?
The obvious goal is for a medal, however with the
change of format favouring the team with less depth this could allow previous
irrelevant universities to have a run at gold which could be detrimental to our
very deep and solid squad. However we will take it one shot a time, and strive
for the gold medal all week.
Who are the teams to beat in the competition?
There are a few teams that have controlled the podiam
over the last few years with Monash being one of them. However teams like UTS,
RMIT, Bond, UNSW and others always have a few good players, and with the format
change to only 3 scores counting per team, the pressure will be on all the boys
to get dialled, fire at pins and go low.
Who should we look out for on your team? Any Div 1
debutants or veterans?
The 2017 Veteran Sean Smith's return to golf has been a
fairytale, carding a 3-under par round upon return followed with a square and
1-under- he's definitely a smoky to take home the individual prize as well as
being the player the team can rely on to carry us home. The ever consistent 3rd
year veteran and Captain, Cameron Kaye is starting to find form in his home
town of Ballarat. Cam is well regarded as a generational iron player in the
Monash golfing community. Ben Fynmore is looking for redemption after a
disappointing first debut Nationals two years ago battling the shanks amongst
other things, however has seemed to find his form in Metropolitans GC colts
pennant team earlier this year.
It was a long off season of recruiting for the managers
Cameron and Ben but they believe they have found 3 diamonds in the rough to
debut this Nationals in Jason Watkins, Ben Rosen and Charlie Wackett. The long
hitting Jason Watkins has been known to heat up and fly very close to the sun
early on the front nine, however when flying so high, oxygen is thin and he can
come crashing back to earth. Team Monash will rely on Jason maintaining
composure during this time to grind out a respectable number on these days.
Furthermore, with the loss of Monash golf legend Shaan Marne to Uni Melb, the
recruiters went looking for a similar player and found that in Ben Rosen. For
what Ben lacks in length off the tee and flash in general, he makes up for in
grit. Ben is the man for those 78's on a tough windy day, an asset every team needs.
Lastly, there is Charlie Wackett. Charlie is coming off a career low 73 just 2
weeks ago however is well known to have battled the shanks for the past 2
years. Charlie is the short priced favourite to shoot a three figure score one
day however will always bounce back with a score in the high 70's.
