Our Monash Sailors are setting sail for Queensland and will be competing at this years UniSport Division 1 Nationals.
The squad spoke to TeamMONASH ahead of its return to the big stage and expectations are high after finishing second last year!
"In 2018 our team placed in a very close and disappointing 2nd place due to lack of time being left to complete a full finals series. Previously, Monash came in 3rd place in 2017 and 2nd in 2016.
After years of anguish, the stage is set for the team to finally win gold. With everyone in peak condition, there are no excuses and everyone is eager to get out on the water and do it for Monash.
"The team is fit and in peak condition ready to take on Nationals with a very eager attitude. We unfortunately only had one event so far this year, but placed in 2nd and 3rd, losing by 1 point to Melbourne Uni at the Victorian Teams Racing University State Championship.
"Ideally we would love to come through and smash it out this season and finally take home gold after placing 2nd and 3rd in 2018 and 2017 respectively but with a majorly fresh team
we’re excited to get out and see what we can achieve!
The competition is fierce and 1st place won't come easy, but our determined sailors are better prepared than ever.
"Last years winners University of Technology Sydney had a very young team with a lot of promise and will prove to be great competition again this year. University of Queensland have really been the team to beat for a number of years now, however with word of their team having fresh additions, who knows what the leader board will look like!
"We’re proud to announce that we have two debutants this year who are extremely talented, both being scholarship holders of the Victorian Institute of Sport, Sophie Jackson and Josh Galland, they will be a great fit in the team next to our veteran Maddy Salter who has really been upping her game on the water, travelling nationally for various events this year."
