Slam-dunk for Monash in Korea
The Monash Men’s Basketball Team had the honour of playing in the 1988 Seoul Olympic stadiums as they competed for gold in the 2014 Asia Pacific Men’s Basketball Challenge in Korea.
The boys battled it out over the eight day tournament, winning their first game against Japan, before losing their next three to Korea #2, Korea #3 and China, but there was no loss of face according to Director of TeamMONASH, Martin Doulton.
“Monash played the best university teams in the Asia Pacific, and all the boys should feel incredibly proud of the very professional way in which they represented themselves, their University and their country," Mr Doulton said.
Team manager and postgraduate mechanical engineering student, Rob Jensen, said the experience has been amazing and well worth the journey.
“From the time we stepped out of the airport in Seoul we have been treated like professional players, with quality facilities. Although the end result wasn’t the one we wanted , the whole team has taken a lot from the experience,” Rob said.
”We would also like to thank Monash University, Australian University Sport and Basketball Australia for their support of this once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Overall the Korean #1 team took out the challenge, but Monash worked as a consistent solid unit throughout their time and were able to position themselves as no easy beats against some stiff competition.
Off the court the team were able to explore the vast cultural hotspot that is South Korea, tasting new dishes, visiting tourist sights and learning the local language.
The team is now looking ahead to this year’s Australian University Games (AUG) in October, where they will again compete to defend their title as the best university Mens Basketball team in Australia.
