Let the Games Begin!

The annual Southern University Games will commence next week in Albury-Wodonga, with over 200 Monash students battling it out for gold.

Director of TeamMONASH™ Martin Doulton, hopes this year will be another outstanding one for Monash, with the team’s hard work and commitment paying off.

“The Southern University Games is a truly fantastic event for students to don the Monash uniform, while also competing against the best of the best in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania,” Mr Doulton said.

Thirteen teams from nine different sporting events will contend for victory, in an action packed five day schedule.

Leading Monash is Science and Commerce student Joel Moskovic an ultimate frisbee player who also plays for a men’s club called Heads of State, and Engineering and Science student Alexandra Gummer, a talented futsal and soccer champion. Both athletes are feeling confident in the lead up.

“We are both really excited for this year’s Games, apart from competing with our friends, it’s a really fantastic opportunity to represent Monash and hopefully win gold for our university,” Alexandra said.

Alexandra has competed in the Adelaide United Lady Reds Adelaide Women’s Professional League and is currently playing soccer for the Booroondara Eagles Women’s Premier League and futsal in the WV league for Ashburton Futsal Club. Joel is a talented frisbee player who won gold with Monash Ultimate at the Australian University Games in 2013, 2011 and 2010.

Since the inaugural games in 1991, the Southern University Games have become known as a friendly but competitive environment for student athletes from the southern region of Australia to compete against like-minded students.
