Monash is proud to announce that we have not one, but two athletes selected to represent Australia, and their Club at the 11th Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championships.

Brynner Loke (Master of Management, Caulfield) and Melinda Koh (Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Primary Education and Bachelor of Arts, Clayton) will don the Australian colours as they look to continue Australia’s strong tradition in the sport.

Brynner and Melinda will compete as paddlers in the standard boat mixed and the small boat women, with the races consisting of three distances - 200m, 500m and 2km.

A standard boat has 22 in it, with 20 paddlers and a small boat has 12 in it, with 10 paddlers.

After a successful campaign in China, 2017, The Australian crew is looking to build upon 2017, with strong performances.

Held every two years, the 2018 Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championships will be in Szeged, Hungary, July 17-22, and will bring together the best crews from around the world to compete against one another.

Brynner has expressed his anticipation for the event.

“Words cannot described the excitement I have, to be given the opportunity to represent the Yarra River Dragons and Australia at this prestigious event,” said Brynner.

“My first time at this event was 8 years ago when I represented my home country, Singapore, in Macau and I have come a long way in this sport since.”

“I look forward to competing alongside my fellow Monash teammate, Melinda, at the 11th edition of this race.”

“I am immensely grateful for the support that Team Monash has provided us in order for us to compete at this the international level.”

“Being full time students and training as semi-professional Athletes takes a lot of determination and discipline, but Team Monash was with us every step of the way to ensure we could reach our goals.”

“As the competition beckons, we hope to fly not only our team’s and country’s colours high in Hungary, but Team Monash’s one as well. Wish us luck!”

We wish Brynner and Melinda all the best as they take on the world!

We are right behind you, go get ‘em! #monashpride
