Monash graduate, Trent Reeve, has just returned from competing
for Australia at the 16th Kendo World Championships. Kendo, the
Japanese sword based martial art, is widely known for combining the elements of
mental discipline and physical prowess.
After graduating from Monash in 2012 with a Bachelor of
Biomedical Science and a Diploma of Languages (Japanese), Trent spent a year
honing his skills at the Nippon Sports Science University in Toyko, Japan.
Training up to 17 times a week, Trent worked in earnest to achieve his goal of
being a part of the Australian team. He achieved this by being chosen as one of
the 7 team members to represent Australia at the 16th World
Championships in Tokyo last month.
Competing at the World Championships in both the individual
and team events, Trent impressively won three of his four matches for the
tournament. After winning his first two matches in the individual event, Trent
lost in the Round of 64, to Korea’s highest ranked fighter. In the team event,
Trent won his match 2-0, however the Australian team did not progress out of
the pool stages.
“Monash Graduates, like Trent, who are competing at the
highest level in their chosen sport, exhibit the commitment to excellence and
ambition that Monash University prides itself on”, said Director of TeamMONASH
Martin Doulton.
Trent represented Monash University in Kendo at the
Australian University Games as a player from 2009-2011, and coach in 2014. In
the three years he competed for Monash, Trent won the Green & Gold Medal,
signifying his place in the all-star team each year. Luckily for our current
students, Trent will again be coaching the Monash University AUG team this
year.
Trent has now set his sights on the 17th World
Championships which will be held in Korea in 3 years’ time. We congratulate
Trent on his fantastic achievements and wish him all the best in his future
tournaments.
