Reflections on a Fantastic Year

As another calendar year has come to a close and as a new one begins, we reflect on some of the many highlights from the year gone by, as well as look forward to the many exciting events we have planned for 2015.


 
Since 2004 Team MONASH has been involved in helping over 19,400 members of Monash University community participate in 75 community based events including the Mother’s Day Classic, Around the Bay in Day Bicycle ride and Melbourne Marathon
The University celebrated its 10th Anniversary of being part of the Mother’s Day Classic and again won the prize- for the 10th time- for being the Largest (participation in the MDC) Tertiary institution with 476 participants of which 289 were current Monash students
2014 saw the largest number of students represent Monash in Inter University Sport competitions with 1129 participating at the Australian University Games, Southern University Games and Australian University Championships winning 8 National titles in doing so and gaining 3rd place in the overall University Sporting Championship title
The Women’s Netball team took out the Team of the Year title having now won the AUG Division 1 Championship 4 years in a row and narrowly beating the AUG Women’s Basketball team for the title.
Monash University beat its traditional rivals Melbourne in the inaugural Varsity Challenge an initiative which brought inter University sport back onto campus with a  bang in 2014. Consisting of 9 sports events over two nights Monash won the Challenge 5-4 overall and bragging rights for 12 months!
The first University Sports Club Presidents Forum in 14 years was held with over 80 representatives from the 45 affiliated Clubs- who have a membership base of 4347- building a better understanding of the role of sport in supporting student recruitment, engagement, transition, retention, leadership development and success in the modern University environment.
 Over 100 teams compete weekly for Monash University in local regional and National competitions with highlights being Monash University Mystics Cheerleading Club's 5 National titles and competing in the World University Championships in Florida.
When Monash University joined up with the Australian Sports Commissions Elite Athlete Friendly University scheme in 2004 we had 4 student athletes of national standard or higher registered. In 2014 Monash University assisted 88 student athletes qualifying for EAFU support with another 387 bursaries awarded to student athletes of national standard or higher.
Two Monash University students represented Australia at World University Sport level in 2014. Nathan Berry ( PhD Engineering, Triathlon- Brasilia Brazil) and Karina Fyffe ( PhD MBBS, Cross Country- Entebbe Uganda)
Having won the AUG Division 1 Men’s Basketball title in 2013 Monash University represented Australia in the 1st Asia Pacific University Basketball Tournament in Seoul, Korea in July 2014 coming a creditable 5th against the best University basketball teams in the region.
The role of Team Monash broadened to much more than Sport in 2014 to develop further intra and external community engagement and new initiatives such as the Host Year program with 216 student volunteers and a broader partnership to include volunteering and awareness raising with Ronald McDonald House Clayton reinforcing the focus of ‘Thinking Globally Acting locally’. In 2014 the 976 Team MONASH Support crew volunteer’s assisted 12,665 members of the Monash community participate in activities that build friendships, raised funds for charity and further developed the special spirit that is Monash University.

Team MONASH has so many things planned for 2015 that it’s difficult to know where to begin! With a focus on Participation, Volunteering, Leadership and Representation we are anticipating a phenomenal year where more of the Monash University community to experience the Spirit of Monash, to share their Passion for Monash and show their Pride in Monash.
 
 
 
Building the campus community connections with our neighbours so that Monash University students are seen and act as a seamless part of the whole neighbourhood such as the Fast Track to Quality Teaching volunteer program with Scouts Victoria and the Cooking up a Storm community program with Ronald McDonald House Clayton.
 
  • Ensuring our growing teams of participants and supporters in some of the core events such as the Mothers Days Classic, Run for the Kids, Melbourne Marathon and Around the Bay in a Day can access the wonderful support services offered through the UniHub.
 
Raising the awareness for and support of the  University community for the 1100+ students who will represent Monash in inter-varsity activities this year including the Uni Battle, Varsity Challenge, University Championships and the Australian University Games.
 
Rolling out the Host Year Pilot program - where students are available to help students find their way around - at every Victorian campus.
 
To kick off the year with the Team MONASH Hub’s at the Clayton and Caulfield Orientation festivals showcasing the great representation, Club, Leadership and Volunteering activities and programs that all students can join in with regardless of which campus and course they are enrol in- just by being part of the Team! All this in addition to sharing the great news at Parkville, Peninsula, Berwick and Monash College.
