Recognising the talent of Monash
Student athletes and volunteer administrators from around Monash were awarded for their outstanding contribution and participation in Sport and community involvement for the University, at the 2014 TeamMonash™ Awards.
Triathlete and PhD engineering student, Nathan Barry took home the award for Best Male Athlete of the Year.
Nathan finished in fifth place at the World University Triathlon Championships held in Brazil, and was the only Australian in the event.
Nathan was surprised to receive the award and thankful for all the support TeamMonash™, have given him throughout his time at the University.
“Monash has been fantastic to me, and I am extremely grateful for their support throughout my time here. Brazil has been my hardest race to date, and I couldn’t have done it without the backing of Monash,” Nathan said.
With her sights on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, fencing champion Samantha Auty won Female Athlete of the year. Samantha represented Monash at the Australian University Games where she placed first and is currently ranked number one in Australia.
Director of TeamMonash™, Martin Doulton said it was great to see so many Monash athletes recognised for their dedication and commitment.
“As well as the community awards 45 sport specific blues awards were presented to student athletes who played their part in representing the University at the varsity level during 2014. Monash is proud to have so many students represent the University at this high level, and these awards acknowledge all their hard work and effort,” Mr Doulton said.
Coach of the Year went to Qixiang Huang who coached the men's futsal team to a second gold medal at the Australian University Games futsal competition since its inception in 2013.
Sport Manager of the Year went to Matthew Powers, who has worked tirelessly as Touch Manager in the campaign for the inter-varsity program.
Team of the Year went to AUG Women's Netball Team, who won their fourth consecutive gold medal, having been the unbeaten Division 1 champions at the Australian University Games since 2011.
The Monash Boardriders Club took out Club of the Year; the club has worked together over the year to create a successful calendar of events for 2014 for surf, skate and snow. The team organised five surf camps throughout the year, one of which was the Australian University Championships held in Newcastle where the team came third overall.
Program of the Year went to Run Monash. Now averaging over 80 participants every week Run Monash not only promotes healthy and active lifestyles but has developed into a welcoming community group for international and rural students of the University.
Male Volunteer of the Year Miguel Morales has been a key part of the Monash Touch Football Club. This is Miguel’s eighth year with the club and he has become a vital part of weekly training sessions and development of the first-year players.
Female Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Kavi Ramanayake. Kavi has successfully mentored 20 students in 2013 and 2014 with the introduction of the non-residential colleges at Monash, and has since been promoted to senior college advisor. Kavi was involved in the 2014 Australian University Games, and was integral to the success of Open Day.
