Monash PhD student runs for Australia
Monash PhD student, Karinna Fyfe, will represent Australia in the 2014 World University Cross Country Championships, held in Uganda in March.
Karinna qualified for the Australian team through a nomination process, where her previous races and current form were taken into account.
Spanning six kilometres, the race will take place March 22, in Entebbe, Uganda. For Karinna, this may not be her longest race to date, but it will be one of her most competitive.
“I’m excited and feel I’m in reasonably good form both physically and mentally for the challenge. It will definitely be tough but I feel ready and prepared,” Karinna said.
As a Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) student, Karinna is aiming to finish her PhD, which focuses on investigating the causes of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
The World University Cross Country Championships is just one of 24 World University Championships being held in 2014, in 53 countries across five continents.
Director of TeamMONASH™ Martin Doulton, wished Karinna every success in her endeavours in Uganda.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Karinna to represent not only Monash but also Australia, there will be a high level of competition in Uganda, but we have every confidence that Karinna will make a strong contribution to the teams efforts,” Mr Doulton said.
Karinna is due to leave for Uganda in the middle of March, to allow herself a week to become accustomed to the temperature and terrain.
Karinna is part of the Monash University Elite Athlete Support Program.
