The Diamond of Monash
With the Australian Commonwealth Games fast approaching, the Australian Netball Diamonds have recently named their 18 player squad, with Karyn Bailey named as one of the players.
Juggling her full time role as a Programs Coordinator for TeamMonash™ while competing at an elite level as a shooter for the Melbourne Vixens, Ms Bailey feels honoured to return to the Australian Netball Diamonds Squad for the first time since 2012.
After an impressive ANZ Championship season with the Vixens and with the 2015 World Netball Championships looming on the horizon, Ms Bailey is looking forward to the Commonwealth Games selection camp which will be held in Canberra this May.
“These camps showcase the high calibre of talented netballers we have in Australia. The camps highlight the level of commitment required to succeed at this level and no stone is left unturned when it comes to fitness testing, media training, seminars and meetings”, Ms Bailey said.
“Having been part of the squad previously, I know it’s going to be intense but I wouldn’t give it up for the world”.
Eighteen players will compete for the 12 spots on the Australian Netball Diamonds Team and the opportunity to play against Wales, England, Barbados, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobagoin Glasgow this coming July.
Director of TeamMonash™ Martin Doulton, has praised the efforts of Ms Bailey to be again selected for the Squad.
“Selection into the Diamonds is such an amazing achievement for this dedicated individual. We wish her all the best in her campaign to the Commonwealth Games,” Mr Doulton said.
The Vixens season won’t conclude until a month before the Commonwealth Games, and as selection camp approaches, Ms Bailey will continue her regular training regime which includes gym, courtwork, and shooting sessions.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself in the lead up to selection camp. At this stage my main focus is to continue to provide a strong presence in the goaling circle for the Melbourne Vixens”, Ms Bailey said.
To determine the Australian Netball Diamonds Squad, Netball Australia national selectors viewed every ANZ Championship game, collected statistical data on every player, and took past international performances and Diamonds Camps into consideration.
After such a complex selection process, the Australian Netball Diamonds Squad consists of a group of fit athletes at the pinnacle of their sport. The full Australian Netball Diamonds Squad will regroup after the completion of the Commonwealth Games for an International test series in September and October.
